As a hairdresser, I have had the privilege of working in the hair industry for over 25 years. Throughout my career, I have had the pleasure of hearing and sharing in the wonderful life moments my guests have experienced. However, inevitably, as we all get older, moments in life creep in that aren't so wonderful, moments that test us to the very core. Some of my lovely guests, whom I had the pleasure of being their hairdresser for many years, started facing some of these challenges - cancer being one.
I vividly remember the moment when they would sit gowned in my chair, look into my eyes through the mirror, and in numb disbelief, break their awful news. At which point, their gaze would turn to a focused stare right at me, and they would ask, "What about my hair? I'm told I might lose it. Is that right? Janemarie, can you help me?"
The truth was, at that time, I couldn't help them. Me, their hairdresser, the person they've trusted all these years, the person that's helped them look their best during the good times and now, I had nothing to say at arguably the moment they needed their hairdresser most. All I could offer was my sympathy, but no advice, no answers to their questions. I felt awful.
I realised that hair is not just hair, but it is a symbol of one's identity and a part of their self-expression. Losing hair can be devastating, and it can affect one's self-esteem and confidence. As a hairdresser, I felt helpless and wanted to do something to help in their time of need.
So, I decided to educate myself about wigs and hair loss solutions to help my guests feel more comfortable during this difficult time.
It is essential to remember that hair loss is not just physical but emotional too. As hairdressers, we have a unique opportunity to help our guests feel confident and beautiful, even during the most challenging times. It's an honour to be able to help my guests through their hair loss journey, and I am grateful for the trust they place in me.
If you or anyone you know is facing any of these fore mentioned issues, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
